Bonus: Resume and Tips
- Create a Linkedin and a GitHub and add some projects.
- Read this resume guide and update your resume: How to Write a Kickass Resume and This is what a GOOD resume should look like
- Go to the career center and ask them to check your resume, or ask someone you know to check it for you.
- Get a CS related student job, there are some at Carleton! Examples: CS TA and grader, Data Squad, Web Services Student Developer, Academic Technology and ITS student worker, digital humanities intern…
- You can also get a part-time internship! Some companies that offer part-time internships are Warner Bros. Discovery (HBO Max, …), Fox News, Box, Wix, The Home Depot, HPE, Intel, NBC Universal, Wall Street Journal, Proofpoint, Crowdstrike, and IBM. Those are usually 16-24h/week that you do while taking classes full time (I recommend taking only 12-14 credits).
- Ask for referrals if you know someone that works for the company that you are applying - more likely to get an interview. There is a list with Alumni willing to refer Carleton students.
- Mock interviews with friends or online using a tool like Pramp is a great way to get a real life technical interview experience.
- Want to know what’s an SWE intern’s salary at big tech companies? Check Levels.fyi
- Do personal projects to learn new things. You can also add some class projects to your resume. Some classes with substantial programming projects: Comps (CS 399 & 400), Operating Systems (CS 332), Database Systems (CS 334), Prog Lang (CS 251 Scheme interpreter), Computer Graphics (CS 311), AI (CS 321, final project), Artificial Life (CS 361). I have also seen people using stuff from Software Design (CS 257) or Data Science (STAT 220) (however, those projects are considered pretty basic).
- You can find more stuff in LinkedIn, Handshake, CS Opportunities Twitter account, r/csMajors, Blind.
- Don’t be afraid of rejection; it’s part of the process! If you don’t apply, then you definitely are not getting in, but if you do, there’s a nonzero chance.
